Asbestos is the greatest single cause of work related deaths in the UK, killing around 3000 people every year. Breathing in the fibres can lead to cancer without hope of a cure. Most of these victims worked in industries making or using asbestos products, and asbestos is now banned – but whenever you work on older properties you can find asbestos.
Some products, like pipe lagging are so dangerous that only specialist decontamination and removal contractors can deal with them – but most of us face asbestos cement roofing.
The good news is that flat or corrugated asbestos cement sheets and guttering contains only 10%-15% asbestos. The asbestos is tightly bound into the cement and if handled properly it can be perfectly safe.
The bad news is that asbestos roofing will shed fibres if it is damaged or broken.
Drilling, cutting or otherwise working on asbestos cement is prohibited, as well as unwise. The only solution if it is in poor
condition is to carefully remove and dispose of it. But you can’t simply throw it in the back of your van and head for the
