Making the grade - Red Battens From John Brash

Article Image 1

When a roofing batten fails the consequences are costly and dangerous. A Health & Safety inspector or Clerk of Works can demand that the entire roof be stripped if battens are found wanting – and tile and slate warranties could become invalid too. Even worse, falling through a roof can be fatal for a roofer and the resulting negligence and insurance claims against the contractor can be catastrophic.

Thanks to some pioneering work and over £2 million of investment, John Brash, the UK’s leading supplier of quality graded timber battens, have developed John Brash RED battens, which are unique in being pre-graded at the sawmill..

The high precision scanning procedure involves optical and laser scanning, which ensures that every single batten passing down the John Brash production line is analysed. Defects are measured against prescribed profiling criteria – guaranteeing that RED battens are safe on-site.

So, with RED battens, the whole roofing process is safer – and a lot quicker. There is no need for on-site grading or measuring, and each batten is precision machined to guarantee a clean, smooth surface for ease of handling. The battens are guaranteed to meet compliance, and because they are so easily recognisable, they even speed up the inspection time.

John Brash RED carries BRE Certification to meet the requirements of BS5534:2003 and BS8417:2003. Environmentally, the company is working towards ISO 14001 accreditation and already has FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) certification.

A full range of roofing battens and accessories are available and battens suitable from centres in excess of the standard 450mm or 600mm can be designed.
