Zoontjens Roof Paving Slabs - Installation tips
With the pressure of space in many new developments and refurbs flat roofs often have to double as living and circulation areas. Roof gardens terraces galleries penthouses and balconies are all becoming increasingly popular but combining the functions of a roof and a floor can mean compromises.
Floors need to stand up to wear that roofs usually don&rsquot face. Also a roof needs a slope to provide drainage while pedestrian users need a level surface. Solutions that use a bonded on tile or an asphalt surface inevitably mean compromise. The Zoontjens Dreen roof paving system provides an answer.
SIG Roofing Supplies&rsquo Chris Page explains the advantages. &ldquoThe usual answers for roofs that take pedestrian &ndash or even vehicle - traffic are asphalt or bonded slabs. Zoontjens make it easy to build a truly flat roof because the slabs fix onto pads at each corner. These pads lock the slabs together and they can be adjustable for height and level.
Rainwater runs under the slabs so there is no problem with drainage &ndash in fact the waterproof membrane is protected. As an added bonus you can run cables and other services under the slabs themselves.
They come in a big range of colours and can be laid fast cutting labour costs and so the installed price compares very well with that of bonded slabs.&rdquo
Fitting Zoontjens slabs
Zoontjens Dreen slabs are available in a range of sizes for domestic general and vehicle applications. They can be laid on cold warm or inverted roof constructions but all are fitted in the same way.
For areas of heavy pedestrian traffic the Maxi-Dreen® system should be used. Slabs are 60mm thick available in 400 x 600mm 500 x 500mm or 600 x 600mm with either fixed or adjustable Comfix locking discs.
ROOF EDGES
At roof edges Maxi-Dreen® slabs are supported on half Comfix locking discs. The locking discs incorporate a line of fracture that lets them be snapped in accurately.
For lighter pedestrian trafficked areas Mini-Dreen® is suitable with slabs 45mm thick and 300mm square set on bitumen pads and fixed height Comfix locking discs.
The Mini-Dreen® Comfix locking discs also incorporate a line of fracture enabling them to be snapped in half for use at roof edges.
FIXED HEIGHT SYSTEMS &ndash CUT SLABS
At edge details it may be necessary to use cut slabs. With fixed height Maxi and Mini- Dreen® Slabs a rubberised pad 15mm thick is used to support the cut edge of the slab.

Where a height adjustable Maxi-Dreen® slab system is used additional Comfix
locking discs with plastic edge supports are used.
LEVELLING AND SERVICE RUNS
Maxi-Dreen® also allows you to create a completely level surface on roofs laid to falls. This is achieved using the adjustable Comfix locking disc. The clear void created can also be used to accommodate and conceal rooftop services such as pipe runs.
